Intro

The Tukituki Estuary and its surrounds including Grange Creek, provide outstanding habitats for wetland birds, including several rare and iconic species; inanga, smelt, mullet and other native fish. Although much of the area has been modified over the last 100 years it is still ranked highly by the Hawkes Bay Regional Council and Department of Conservation for biodiversity values.

Grange Creek is a major spawning habitat for inunga (whitebait) species and nesting and feeding habitat for native birds including both bush and wetland species.

Inunga spawn where freshwater meets seawater, on small, very sensitve sites in the lower Tukituki River and Grange Creek. Inunga eggs spend most of the time out of water in the high tide area and need streamside vegetation to remain moist and to be protected from harmful UV light.

Bird species present in Grange Creek are slowly growing in numbers and include; shags, grey heron, Kotuku (white heron or little egret), royal spoonbill, kereru (wood pigeon), korimako (bellbird), tui (or koko), kotare (kingfisher), pukeko, kahu (hawk), ruru (morepork) and piwakawaka (fantail).

The Grange Creek waterway and surrounds has huge restoration potential for wetland and coastal shrubland and forest, flax, rushlands and sedgelands, estuarine turfs, wetland bird populations and other terrestial (skinks) native species.

The native vegetation has become so depleted around the wetland system and in the surrounding landscape, that deliberate planting is necessary to re-introduce species and to create a dominant and self-perpetuating cover of native vegetation for the future.

Some regeneration of the native wetland vegetation is evident around the wetland margins, especially shore ribbonwood, rushes, sedges and saline turfs. This improvement needs to continue so that  the natural ecosystems are re-establshed.
